Mindanao city governments and business leaders review procedural reform project

22 May 2006--Mayors, vice mayors, council members and business leaders of 16 Mindanao cities met in General Santos City last 11-12 May to review the progress of the procedural reform project being implemented by partner cities. Discussed also were policy issues related to business permits and licensing, real property tax administration, hospital management, and the management of economic enterprises.

80 public servants finish ethics program in Sultan Kudarat

18 April 2006—At least 80 municipal employees from Lambayong and President Quirino in Sultan Kudarat Province have successfully completed The Asia Foundation’s seven-month Public Service Excellence, Ethics and Accountability Program (PSEEAP). The simple yet meaningful graduation took place separately on 11 April 2006 and was attended by its local chief executives – Mayor Ramon Abalos of Lambayong and Mayor Rodolfo Erese of President Quirino.

10 Mindanao Cities Join Ethics Training

21 March 2006— Last 13 March, participants from 10 city governments – Butuan, Dapitan, Dipolog, Koronadal, Malaybalay, Oroquieta, Ozamiz, Panabo, Tacurong, and Zamboanga – joined in a six-day training of trainers on Public Service Excellence, Ethics and Accountability Program (PSEEAP) at Marco Hotel, Cagayan de Oro City.

Zamboanga del Norte Municipal Employees to Graduate from Accountability Program

15 December 2005—Four mayors from Zamboanga del Norte: Bert S. Macias of Sindangan, Rolando V. Tablezo of Leon Postigo, Oliveros Dalman of Jose Dalman, and Wilfredo Balais of Labasan, will attend the graduation ceremony of their respective employees from the Public Service Excellence, Ethics and Accountability Program (PSEEAP) of The Asia Foundation with generous funding support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The graduation for the Municipality of Jose Dalman will be on December 13, 2005, December 14 for Sindangan, December 15 for Leon Postigo and December 16 for Labason. Ms. Maria Belen Bonoan, Senior Program Officer of The Asia Foundation will attend along with officials from municipal, provincial and national government agencies.

Aside from advancing the agenda for good governance at the national level, the project also directed reforms primarily in selected cities of Mindanao in partnership with the League of Cities and municipalities as well as NGOs and the private sector. Capacity building and institutional strengthening for local governance is crucial in order to develop a counter-corruption culture beginning from the grassroots.
